Our apartment clings to the mountainside near the very top of Cumbre del Sol, 445 metres above sea level. This offers panoramic and uninterrupted views of the sea, with its constantly changing colours and patterns, and interesting ships to watch as they round the lighthouse at Cap de Nao. We are sure you will find the view as fascinating as we do and we leave a pair of binoculars for your use.
The terrace is not overlooked and provides a peaceful haven for sunbathing, (even getting an all over tan!), relaxing with a glass of wine or just watching the boats go by. Facing south east, it gets the sun from dawn to late afternoon. If you’re up early enough, the sunrise over the sea is an amazing sight. In the evening, take an al fresco evening meal there as the moon comes up and shines romantically across the water towards you.
Inside, we have furnished and decorated the apartment as a proper home, (without clutter), and the rooms are light and airy. You will find the beds and bedding comfortable; we provide nice clean linen and, of course, towels for the bathroom and for the beach. The kitchen is well equipped with everything you need from preparing drinks and snacks through to cooking full blown meals. There is a dining table and chairs, and sofa in the living area with TV and DVD player. Not that we want to spend your holiday on domestic chores but there is a washing machine and ironing facilities should you need it!
Just a few steps away are the two infinity swimming pools, each with patio area and sun loungers. Swimming with your eye on the infinity edge and seeing it appear to merge with the sea is an experience in itself.
Although the neighbouring towns and villages are only a 15 minute drive or so away, you don’t have to go that far to stock up on provisions - the national chain supermarkets of Pepe la Sal and Mercadona, respectively just 3 minutes and 5 minutes by car, have everything you need for the drinks, snacks AND the full blown meals mentioned earlier.
If you can summon up the energy, walk (or if not, drive) up the road from the apartment to the very peak of Cumbre del Sol from where you have spectacular all round views of the coast north up to Gandia and south to Calpe, and inland over Moorish terraces - best viewed in the evening light - and towards the mountain ranges of Sierra Verde. There is also a delightful walk from Cumbre del Sol over the National Park through stunning scenery to La Granadella bay - one of the top 10 beaches on the Costa Blanca.
Cumbre del Sol has its own beach hidden dramatically at the bottom of the mountain just five minutes drive away from the apartment. Cumbre del Sol sits between lovely but very different towns, all within 20 minutes drive:
Moraira - Sandy Blue Flag beach and marina, where you can see the old fort, local shops, Friday market, and variety of cafes and restaurants.
Javea - On the way to Javea, there are spectacular views of the Montgo known as the “elephant” mountain due to its shape. The wide sandy Blue Flag beach of Arenal is backed by a long line of cafes and restaurants. Drive behind Javea out to Capo de San Antonio with its lighthouse and Los Molinos, a line of old windmills above Javea bay for great coastline views. In Javea itself, you can see plenty of local shops, the Old Town historical area and find yet more places to eat and drink. The port provides another popular area for more eating and drinking!
Benitachell - This is a village just behind Cumbre del Sol, which is typically Spanish with authentic Spanish houses in narrow streets and a lovely old church.
El Portet - El Portet is a lovely cove with sandy beach and shallow water ideal for children. There is a breathtaking (and challenging) cliff side walk from here back to the beach at Cumbre del Sol with unbelievable scenery and rock formations.
You can see videos of the places we mentioned on the Spain holiday site.
Within half an hour’s drive you will come to:
Benissa - a tawny-coloured town, built in land from the coast with old houses and cathedral.
Calpe - a former fishing village with two sandy beaches, good water sport facilities, many restaurants and summer nightlife.
Denia - lying beneath the height of the Montgo natural park and where you can visit the castle. From here ferries run to the Balearic Islands.
Gandia - the Playa de Venecia, 20 km of golden sandy beach and excellent facilities for sailing and windsurfing.
Altea - original fishing village with a hill top blue-tiled church reached through narrow streets and picturesque whitewashed house.
Within around an hour’s drive you can also find:
Alicante - visit the Santa Barbara castle and marina and harbour where large cruise ships regularly call in.
Valencia - also with marina and harbour and having really interesting and atmospheric old quarters which are well worth the drive.
Benidorm - for the young at heart, the main attractions are:
Aqualandia - a waterpark with slides
Mundomar - dolphin and sea lion shows, etc
Terra Mitica - Disney style adventure theme park
Terra Natura - a super wildlife park
Benidorm Palace - cabaret (for the grown ups!)
Inland from Cumbre del Sol you are soon in mountainous country with superb scenic routes to drive:
notably the Col de Rates and on to Guadalest with a nice castle to visit.
In the apartment you will find a box full of ideas and suggestions for nearby activities and attractions which we’ve collected for your scintillation and enjoyment.
According to the World Health Organisation, this area of Spain is one of the healthiest to live in the world. We moved here six years ago and have enjoyed the climate all year round, the views and the peace and quiet, and we believe that WHO is quite right!
