Puerto Pollensa

The resort of Puerto Pollensa lies 58km north east of Palma in Mallorca, and is one of the furthest resorts from the airport, as a consequence transfer time may be a lengthy two hours from the time you leave the airport grounds.

Tourists have been coming to Puerto Pollensa since the 1920s and the hotels on the sea front still retain an old fashioned air, having been built long before the concrete boom of the 1960s developments. Today the town attracts mainly British families looking for something more than the hussle and bussle of the south coast resorts.

The wonderful scenery, beautiful sandy beaches and a laid-back friendly atmosphere, make Puerto Pollensa a favourite destination for many.


About town
There is a good selection of shops, bars and pavement cafes to choose from, and a couple of years ago now a Burger King opened on the sea front.

In complete contrast, the resort also boasts several high class fish restaurants, which are claimed to be the best on the island.

The resort has little in the way of family type attractions. You wont find water parks or karting tracks here, and is perhaps more suited for those seeking a quiet relaxing break.


Places to visit
The original Roman town of Pollensa can still be found 5km inland from the port (Puerto) and is certainly worth a visit whilst you are there.

The bay of Pollensa is home to a multitude of luxury yachts, as well as a mixture of colourful local fishing boats which sadly in recent years are now in the minority.

Beaches
There are a number of small natural beaches in the area, as well as the recently extended artificial one, all offering the usual selection of facilities. The warm shallow waters of the bay make it especially popular for families with small children.


Natural surroundings
Without doubt the main feature of the resort is the dramatic Sierra de Tramuntana mountain range that surrounds and shelters the town. For the more
active, there are numerous walks into these hills from where the views back over the bay are stunning.

A word of warning though, before you venture into the mountains be sure to take a local guide book with you which documents the walks, and tells you everything you need to know.

Cuisine
Traditional food is being rediscovered in the Balearics which varies from island to island, but reflects the cuisine of Catalonia with its combination of sweet and savoury. 

Pork is a main ingredient and Langosta a la parrilla partners spiny lobster with the local home made mayonnaise. 

Do try an ensaimada (a spiral shaped yeast bun) with your morning coffee.

Climate
Puerto Pollensa enjoys a typical Mediterranean weather, with mild winters and hot summers. During the months of July and August, the weather is hot and beautifully sunny, boasting around 11 hours of sun daily.

During the winter, the weather can get chilly, but is generally you can enjoy fine, mild weather on most days.
