GENERAL AREA INFORMATION
La Manga del Mar Menor itself is a narrow strip of land between two seas, the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor (Europe’s biggest salt water lagoon of approx 60 sq miles and is 21km in length). Apartments, villas, hotels, restaurants, small shopping areas and the superb Tomas Maestre Marina take up most of the strip but there are a few undeveloped areas towards the northern end. There are more than 40 km of sandy beaches to choose from on both sides and it is always possible to find a seemingly deserted spot to enjoy even in height of summer.
The average annual temperature is 17 C, and the average for the months of June, July, August and September is above 21 C. Winter is very mild, with the average temperature in the cold months not falling below 10 C. The area receives very little rainfall and boasts 320 days and 3000 hours of sunshine per year.
Because of its’ unique geographical formation, clean water and favourable weather conditions, the Mar Menor is like a gigantic swimming pool, where watersports can be practised without any dangers. It offers infinite possibilities to the lovers of sailing, wind and kite surfing, water skiing and scuba diving. Here there is no need to catch the latest weather forecast or wait for the best summer days to enjoy the ideal conditions for going out to sea.
For those wishing to explore the area further, small towns (that used to be fishing villages) flank the coast of the Mar Menor, many with local markets and traditional Spanish tapas bars and restaurants. There is a regular daily ferry service across the Mar Menor from Tomas Maestre Marina to Santiago de la Ribera.
Lovers of art and history will discover that Cartagena is not only the natural port for the region of Murcia but is also one of the oldest cities in Spain.
The Regional Park of Calblanque offers a vast area of unspoilt countryside that can be explored by car, bicycle or on foot.
This area also offers several Golf courses within a short drive away, including the 3 quality championship courses at the well-known La Manga Club. There is, however, a 9-hole course and driving range adjacent to the apartment.
The fabulous Tomas Maestre Marina is just a few minutes drive away from the apartment, (or just 2 stops away on the regular local bus service) where numerous restaurants and bars can be found with romantic sunset views of the Marina and Mar Menor. The commercial centre here has a large supermarket with a very good selection of fresh fruit, meat, fish and vegetables. Another supermarket, shops, banks and a pharmacy are also situated here.
There are other restaurants, small shops and beach bars within walking distance of the apartment.
